Daniel Seeprasad, 46, a pedal cyclist of Lot 12 Patentia West Bank Demerara, became the country’s latest road fatality yesterday when he was struck down by a motor pick-up in his home village.
The accident occurred at around 02:20 hrs yesterday. Kaieteur News understands that the dead man was riding his bicycle along the roadway when he was struck down by the driver of the motor pick-up. The vehicle drove away from the scene.
The man was later taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. According to the victim’s son, Takchand Seeprasad, he last saw his father earlier in the night. He said that he became aware of the accident when a friend, who was also the ambulance driver, came to his house and told him.
He said that he immediately rushed to the hospital, but received the tragic message about his father’s passing. He said that he was saddened to know that the driver got away, but was later relieved to learn that the police had caught the driver at Nismes, West Bank Demerara.
According to a police press release, the driver was suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol. Both the driver and pick-up are presently in police custody.
