Amelia’s Ward Jets soared to their fourth consecutive win in the Pioneer Construction and Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) League Friday night when they played Alleyene’s Retrieve Raiders.
Jets won 68–61 despite a 13–point deficit with less than five minutes to play in the final quarter. Raiders led the first period 17–15 and maintained the lead 33–24 at halftime before taking a 49–32 advantage after the third.
Point Guards Delbert Kitt and Captain Kevin Joseph led the Jets surge with 22 and 18 points respectively while the Webster brothers supported with nine points each for the team that had beaten League leaders, Royals last week.
Devon Gittens had 17 points and Louis James had 14 points for the Alleyene’s Raiders in the first game as Victory Valley Royals slumped to their second straight defeat at the hands of Patriots this time in the featured game.
Patriots edged Royals 64–62 after the latter led the first quarter 19–17, half time 33–30 and the third quarter 47–41. The game was well poised after the scores were leveled at 58 points in the closing minutes of the final quarter.
Veteran Ron Wilson scored a lay–up with just over one minute to play and the final basket from the free–throw line to give his team the win with 1.2 seconds left in the game and little time for Royals to score an equalizer.
Neil Marks top scored with 21 points for Patriots, while Wilson and Thorton Wilson made good on their opportunities with 11 points each. Lawrence Dacista scored 20 points while Orlando Glasgow and Ron Beckles had 12 each for Royals.
Raiders took on Patriots while Jets handled New Ballers last night; meanwhile Ballers are to play Patriots and Jets Wismar Pistons when the LABA League continues at the Mackenzie Sports Club court tonight.
Reigning National Champions, Pistons took over the lead from Royals with 9 points from four wins and one loss while Royals and Jets are tied for second in the Pioneer Construction–sponsored League with 8 points each.
Jets have four wins from four games, while Royals are with three wins and two defeats from five games. Patriots are on 6 points from two wins and two losses while Raiders and Bulls have 4 points each from their games.
