The Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis Boxing Gym was built by the Government as a token of appreciation after Lewis had defeated James Page to become Guyana’s first world champion.
The principal idea behind the construction of the facility was to accommodate the youngsters of Albouystown and the adjoining communities.
It was hoped that these youngsters would have garnered valuable training in sports as well as other areas.
The gym has since been utilized by many boxers including Lewis, in preparation for the Denny Dalton and Howard Eastman Clashes.
However, the management committee that was instituted to oversee the proper running of the facility has not been functioning.
Boxers have been training at the facility devoid of the professional tutoring that was promised by Odinga Lumumba when the gym had opened its doors for public use.
Last year, the coach responsible for the training programme, George Oprecht was detained on a Police matter. He is currently undergoing court proceedings.
In the meantime, former amateur boxer, Brian ‘Tommy Hearns’ Barker has taken up the mantle and is currently carrying out training sessions.
Barker intimated that the job is indeed taxing but he is encouraged by the benefits derived by the youngsters.
He said that the facility has provided the youngsters of the Albouystown community with viable activity while they utilize their spare time productively.
He is appealing to the relevant authorities to assist the youngsters by providing the type of equipment that could be used meaningfully towards the development of the youths.
