The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown (M&CC) yesterday handed over two containers of supplies to Cuban Ambassador Pedro Arteaga Cardenas as part of their contribution to the citizens of Cuba, who recently suffered the effects of a disastrous hurricane.
At a simple ceremony held at the municipal chambers, City Mayor Hamilton Green said that the items were acquired through the assistance of some 28 business entities, which demonstrated a willingness to render assistance when they were approached by the municipality.
Among the items expected to arrive in Cuba within the next two weeks are mattresses, lumber, paint, torch lights, umbrellas, tarpaulins, clothing, water and foodstuff.
According to Ambassador Cardenas, the donation will be highly appreciated by the beneficiaries, whose lives were devastated last year.
He disclosed that the items that were solicited will help immensely towards the rebuilding and rehabilitation of homes which were either completely or partially destroyed.
More than 500,000 homes were destroyed, and thousands have been left homeless in Cuba.
The ambassador said that the Cuban people will be especially grateful because of the fact that Guyana is a poor country but has, nevertheless, been able to display an act of solidarity with them.
“On behalf of the Cuban people, I have to say, ’Thank you,’ to the people of Guyana,” the ambassador said.
And to show appreciation for the involvement of the local businesses, City Mayor Hamilton Green presented representatives of the business places with certificates of appreciation.
The recipient organisations included Barama Company Limited, the Caricom Secretariat, John Fernandes Limited, Sookraj and Sons, Precision Woodworking, Gafsons, Ramchand’s Auto Sales, RRT International, The Hardware Emporium, Beharry Group of Companies, Ricks and Sari, Bhagwans, China Trading, Silvie’s General Store, Giftland Office Max, AH&L Kissoon, Bakewell, N&S Mattai and Company, H. A. Snacks, Muneshwer Limited, IMEX International, Exclusive Styles, Nyalli Hair Fashion, Kirpalani, Bank of Nova Scotia, N. P Home Department, Wiething and Richter and C. and V. Shipping.
