Importers and local manufacturers of the commodities monitored by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) under its standards compliance programme, used tyre dealers and scale manufacturers are urged to be registered with the new GNBS for the year 2009.
With respect to used tyre and cellular phone dealers, GNBS has said that a permit is needed from the Bureau to sell these commodities.
According to GNBS, the fees for registration and the cost for permits are $30,000 and $20,000 respectively and application forms can be obtained at the GNBS office located in the National Exhibition Centre, Sophia or their website at www.gnbs.info.
GNBS is also advising that importers are requested to give at least 24 hours notice to the inspectorate division, when inspections are to be conducted.
Importers/manufacturers are required to be registered before the release of any domestic electrical appliances, weighing and measuring devices, electricity meters, textiles, garments, footwear, ready made garments, seat bolts, safety matches, helmets, tyres, soap powder, paint and paint products, fertilizers, cigarettes, animal feeds, PVS pipes, wooden furniture, fluorescent lamp ballasts, gas stoves, Christmas tree and decorative lighting outfits and cellular phones.
In addition, vendors, retailers, shopkeepers, supermarket owners, rice farmers and millers, health personnel, post offices and other users of scales, weights and measures are reminded to have their devices stamped for the first half of the year, in keeping with the requirements set out under the 1981 Weights and Measures Act. The deadline for stamping is March 27, 2009.
Imperial devices, or devices in the dual mode, devices that are dirty or are kept in a state of disrepair, will not be stamped, GNBS said.
Stamping exercises are currently in progress and this service is available at the Bureau’s office in Sophia, its branch offices in Anna Regina in Region Two and Vryman’s Erven in Region Six or at any of the Weights and Measures Offices located at the Regional Democratic Councils countrywide.
A mobile stamping service is also offered and the stamping team is currently working on the East Coast of Demerara at the Industry, Lusignan, Enterprise.
