Dear Editor,
Last week the President and Cabinet approved an Interim Board for GuySuCo. The Board has been tasked with producing a ‘turnaround’ plan for the sugar industry. This is urgent business given the fall in sugar cane production, and the consequences of the EUs removal of guaranteed prices.
The Interim Board is small, but made up of experienced and competent professionals.
The Chairman of the Board, Dr. Nanda K. Gopaul is a superb pick, given his formal qualifications, his experience in the sugar industry, and his results-oriented approach to management.
Dr. Gopaul holds an M.Phil in Industrial Relations from the University of Glasgow, and a Ph.D in Industrial and Business Studies from the Warwick Business School, Warwick University.
He also attended training courses at Cornell University through an Agency for International Development scholarship, and was a ‘Chevening Scholar’ provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
His executive experience is wide-ranging. He has served on the Board of Directors of Guyana Mortgage Finance Bank, Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund, and is currently Chairman of the Board of the New Building Society and GPHC.
He was head of the Public Service, and is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President.
Nanda Gopaul has been around the sugar industry all his life. Upon graduation from Gandhi Education Institute, he took up a clerical position with Bookers Sugar Estates at LBI. During those years (1969-77) he was drawn into the world of sugar. He was only eighteen when he got involved with the working conditions and rights of sugar workers. Those concerns led him to active agitation for the rights of sugar workers through NACCIE.
In time, he became the General Secretary and then General President of the union. In 1997, Dr Gopaul published Resistance and Change: The Struggles of Guyanese Workers with Emphasis on the Sugar Industry (1964-1994). This 396 page book demonstrates intimate knowledge of all aspects of the sugar industry.
Those who know Dr. Gopaul will tell you that he is not given to useless talk. He is a tolerant man, but he does not suffer fools. He is focused, disciplined, task-driven, and most of all, results-oriented.
The Interim Board made up of Dr. Gopaul (Chair) Geeta Singh-Knight, Keith Burrowes, Dr. Rajendra Singh, Donald Ramotar, J. Raghurai, and Errol Hanoman – has a huge responsibility on its shoulders. President Jagdeo has made it clear he wants a plan of action – in short order. This outstanding Board, chaired by Dr. Gopaul must deliver something bold. I am confident it will.
Dr. Randy Persaud
