Commerce Minister Manniram Prashad has said that, though this will be a very challenging year due to the global financial crisis, the situation needs to be met with an attitudinal change and a more proactive approach.
The Minister added that, in light of the circumstances, everybody will have to “tread carefully.”
Minister Prashad pointed out that Guyana has not been affected as much as other countries. However, there is need to be very innovative and to produce more.
“Our production in rice, sugar, vegetables and other crops is already on the increase; we have to improve on that.”
According to the Minister, developing the manufacturing sector needs to be looked at, and his ministry needs to work closely with them.
“This Ministry, in particular, will have to monitor commodity prices to make sure that consumers in Guyana are not ripped off…We have to put in a lot of measures to make sure that we cope with the global financial problem.”
He urged persons to spend and invest wisely. “I think we will be working closer with investors. We have to make the extra effort.”
According to him, his staff and all the other agencies that attract investment should be more aggressive and proactive in attracting investment. He also stated that bureaucracies need to be eliminated if Guyana is to attract more investors.
“We have to be more investor-friendly. It’s an attitudinal change all of us would have to be involved in.” Minister Prashad also noted that the education programme of the Consumer Affairs Division, educating the public on their rights, needs to be improved and intensified this year, so that shoppers will be aware of their rights and will shop wisely.
“Sometimes, in a crisis situation, that’s when you find opportunities, and I think this is a good chance for Guyana to make use of these opportunities.”
