Johnson, Bess unavailable for Guyana’s next match
By Sean Devers
Right-handed Port Mourant batsman Hoomchand Pooran, who turns 30 next month, has been recalled to the national senior cricket team for the first time since 2003, while fast bowler Trevon Garraway and West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon are the other two players re-called for Guyana’s next match in the regional four-day First-Class against the Leeward Islands in Nevis from January 30.
Pooran, a former West Indies under-19 player, has scored 298 runs at an average of 17.52 with a solitary half-century from his 10 First-Class matches and will be hoping to transform his prolific form at the domestic level to First-Class cricket.
While the 21-year-old pair of West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson and fast bowler Brandon Bess had to be left out of the team, which played the first two games due to their commitments with the West Indies ‘A’ team which face England in St Kitts from February 6, twenty-eight-year-old opener Krishna Arjune, a veteran of 40 First-Class matches, loses his place in the side after failures at the top of the order in both matches this season.
The 27-year-old Chattergoon, who became Guyana’s latest Test player when he played against Sri Lanka in Trinidad last year, will be hoping for a big score to revive his Test career after failing with the bat on the West Indies’ recent tour to New Zealand.
Chattergoon, who has scored four First-Class centuries from 55 matches and averages 32.76 at this level, has played four Tests and 18 ODIs and will strengthen the Guyana batting on a ground on which he scored a second innings century batting with a runner when Guyana last played in Nevis four years ago.
Manager Carl Moore and Coach Albert Smith have retained their positions while Travis Dowlin will continue as Skipper.
The full team read: Sewnarine Chattergoon, Shemroy Barrington, Travis Dowlin, Narsingh Deonarine, Hoomchand Pooran, Royston Crandon, Christopher Barnwell, Steven Jacobs, Esaun Crandon, Davendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Trevon Garraway, Derwin Christian.
The following players are asked to keep training for consideration for the remaining matches: Assad Fudadin, Gajanand Singh, Vishal Singh, Zaheer Mohamed, Krishna Arjune, Delbert Hicks, Paul Wintz.
