President of the Guyana Olympics Association (GOA) K. A. Juman Yassin is calling for dialogue as a means of conflict resolution between the respective sports bodies even as he notes the raging feud amongst the membership of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).
Yassin was responding to questions raised by this newspaper about a plea for intervention in the above mentioned dispute, just weeks before the Annual General Meeting, slated for February 12, to elect office bearers for the next four years. He said that while he respects the right of free expression he was a bit concerned over the way these disputes were being handled. “I have recently seen an upsurge in correspondence to the editors and while I do believe that that this mode of addressing problems may be effective to some extent, I wish to urge that such vile exchanges cease with immediate effect,” Yassin said.
He explained that while the perpetrators may feel that their actions are beneficial to the development of the sport in question, it may in fact be counter-productive. “If these Associations are to progress they will need corporate support and sponsors are not interested in supporting entities that are in dispute,” Yassin warned.
Meanwhile, the GOA boss expressed disappointment in an article appearing in this newspaper that questions the efficiency of his executives. He said that the writer of the article has accused the GOA of laxity pertaining to the creation of opportunities for local athletes.
“I think it is unfair to make these kinds of remarks without firstly attempting to speak with us, Yassin said. We have been working assiduously but we cannot make releases until all arrangements are in place,” Yassin said.
He subsequently informed the media that he has had discussions recently with Head of the Jamaican Athletic Association, Teddy McCook on the possibility of local athlete Alika Morgan traveling to that Island for a stint at the IAAF Centre. According to Yassin the GOA is currently in discussion with Morgan’s coach, Leslie Blacks to sort out the ramifications to make the offer a reality.
Meanwhile, Yassin disclosed that the membership of the GOA had recently met and elected office bearers for the new dispensation. Two new faces, Hector Edwards and Karen Pilgrim have been elected as Assistant Secretary Treasurer and Vice President respectively.
