People who were working at the State House as carpenters nearly carted off a quantity of liquor belonging to the President. They committed the act on Monday last.
“We took the rum after we find it between some empty bottles,” were the words of 41-year-old Alim Gafoor, of Uitvlugt Pasture, and Amasa Nagaper, 37, of Leonora Pasture.
The two pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of liquor worth $18,500, property of State House, Guyana, when they appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.
Their attorney told the court that neither Gafoor nor Nagaper had any previous convictions, and that they were throwing themselves at the mercy of the law. The attorney added that they recognised what they did was illegal.
Police prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that on the day in question, at around 14:45 hrs, the two defendants were working as carpenters at State House.
She said that the articles mentioned were inside the house when the defendants took them, placed the bottles into bags, and attempted to leave for home.
The prosecutor explained to the court that police ranks which were at State House carried out a search and discovered the items on the defendants.
The defendants were told of the offence and were taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
They later admitted to the crime and gave sworn statements.
When asked by the presiding magistrate if they had anything to say, the defendants said that the “rum was between some empty bottles on the corridor, and they thought that no one wanted it.
They further explained to the magistrate that they picked up the Ivanoff Vodka and some other liquors and had the intention of getting drunk, since the rum was left back by the people at State House.
The two defendants were fined $30,000 each, with the alternative of 18 months’ imprisonment.
