While the weather was initially blamed for the stalling of the inaugural GABA League at the Burnham Basketball Court, the same cannot be applicable now that the rains are subsiding and are coming at inconsistent rates.
The Linden subassociation has capitalised on this inconsistency of the weather and has managed to advance six games of its League over a threeday period last weekend on the Mackenzie Sports Club basketball court.
Conversely, the Georgetown association is struggling to resume its League, afraid that the weather might affect the flow of the programme. That should not be a consideration when the weather pattern at this time is known.
If the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) wants to continue waiting on perfect weather then they might as well be prepared to wait another six to seven weeks when the climate changes for a new season.
The tactic is to play games when they are possible but the GABA does not seem inclined to go down that route, which is what Linden has done with much success because, practically, that’s the only available option.
GABA Secretary, Robert Cadogan was scheduled to meet President, Trevor Rose on the matter yesterday where, hopefully, a definite recommencement date would be the outcome so that the League can move forward.
“The GABA League is going to resume very shortly. I will give you a definite date when I meet with the President today (yesterday),” Cadogan said. He had promised a definite date following a prior GABA meeting. When the new Georgetown subassociation Executive took office last year, one of the priority areas on their programme was to return the sport to outdoor facilities because of the high cost of rental for the Sports Hall. There may be other factors why the GABA League seems stalled at the moment that the Secretary is not adamant to admit. Among those factors may be the significantly poor lighting for night games at the facility.
A logistic problem could arise if the Leagues clash with the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) programme, which is expected to commence early next month.
There is a CBC meeting to be held in Saint Lucia early February where the GABF will be informed of the various plans for the 2008 competition. The GABF agenda for national players should start around the same time.
