Secretary of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Marlan Cole speaking with Kaieteur sport yesterday disclosed that they are hoping for improved weather to restart and conclude the 2008 season.
A number of tournaments he said are to be completed while a few are to be played, acknowledging that they have had a very fruitful season so far, Corporate Guyana has been very supportive, Cole stated.
“We are hoping that the weather will improve so that grounds can be prepared for the restart of what we expect to be an exciting climax to a very encouraging 2008 season. We must point out that the business community has really backed us up greatly and we look forward to their continued backing.”
The tournaments to be completed; Banks Beer Division One League with BK International Western Tigers the front runners and are well on course to win the tournament.
Running a close second is Flamingo, who along with Western Tigers, are assured of moving up to the Premier League ranks. The other two teams in the top four playoffs are Beacon and Black Pearl. The Milo under-21 league sponsored by M Beepat & Sons only saw a few games being played late last year. Fifteen teams are contesting in three groups of five each.
The final of the first ever under-11 knock-out tournament sponsored by Williams Shipping is to be played between Fruta Conquerors and Santos. Marian Academy and Beacon will faceoff in the third place encounter.
Cole also disclosed that the GFA has a number of other tournaments on the tables before closing off the season. An under-16 round-robin and knock-out, an under-13 knock-out, the Banks Premium Beer knock-out featuring all the city teams (Premier League and Division One) and possibly, an indoor tournament, are all on the cards.
The Tucville and Camptown grounds are the main facilities used by the GFA for city football which witnessed an unprecedented amount of tournaments in the latter part of last year.
Among the competitions concluded were the Cellink Premier League, Courts Pee Wee League, Chubby under-14 league, DeSinco Trading under-18 league, Namilco Football Festival (private), Alpha Football Festival (private) and Guinness ‘Greatest of De Street’ which was jointly coordinated by Banks DIH Limited, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and the GFA.
