Main political parties celebrate Obama’s inauguration
‘The story of Obama strikes a significant blow to racism around the world’ – Ramotar
A modest crowd yesterday turned up at the Headquarters of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Congress Place, at a function organised by the Chairman (ag) youth arm of the political party, Christopher Jones.
The occasion was the celebration of the inauguration of the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama.

Among the participants were Leader of the party, Robert Corbin, and Party Vice Chairman, Basil Williams.
Jones told the gathering that the story of Obama illustrates that anything is possible once everyone rallies behind a single cause.
Corbin, while extending his congratulation to Obama for his achievement, told the gathering that, “today” (yesterday) was a very significant day in the history of not only the US, but across the entire world.
He noted that the achievement was particularly poignant for “those” who have been fighting for equal civil and human rights.
“Today we have seen part of the fulfillment of the dream of Dr Martin Luther King Jr…where a man should be judged by the content of his character and not by the colour of his skin.”
He noted that Guyanese could especially relate to the history of the USA, given the history of the two countries as it relates to polarization and segregation.
Corbin posited that Obama’s achievement shows what can be achieved when dedicated people unite. “However huge the obstacles are, success could be achieved.”
He said that Guyanese from all reaches have a lot to learn from the story of Obama, given that “we have a very divided society.”
According to Corbin, “I, too, have a dream that one day in Guyana we will make the reality of our motto: one people, one nation, one destiny.”
Last evening, also, the People’s Progressive Party hosted a celebration party for the new American President at the Red House.
In an interview with Kaieteur News, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Donald Ramotar, said that the inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America marks a significant and historic milestone achieved and is a major step forward for the world.
He said that another historic aspect of the inauguration is the fact that, for the first time, an African American is the US President, thereby being the most powerful man in the world.
Ramotar added that the story of Obama strikes a significant blow to racism around the world, and will have an impact on multi-ethnic countries that people can transcend race and vote on issues.
According to Ramotar, Obama’s inauguration is the biggest event in the world since the end of apartheid in South Africa and Nelson Mandela’s walk out of prison.
He posited that because of Obama’s wide international experience, it is quite possible that he would be sensitive to the need of developing countries.
Ramotar wished the Obama Administration all the best in achieving their goals, especially in the bleak circumstance of America at the time he inherits it.
