Guyana’s Manager Carl Moore said that his team has no excuse for yesterday’s loss against the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) in Barbados although he feels that the players are improving if not at the desired rate.
“We went into the game in Grenada without any match practice and we lost. But now we have no excuse since we should have used that first game as match practice and learnt from our mistakes there,” Moore said.
The long-serving Manager said that the players are improving but stressed that while the Guyana team is a young one and mistakes are expected, many of the young players in the region seem to be developing at the desired rate.
“The team spirit is high and the guys are all learning. I am disappointed with the results in our two matches and I don’t think the senior players really contributed consistently to the team although Skipper (Travis) Dowlin batted well in Grenada and Narsingh (Deonarine) played wonderfully here,” Moore said.
The Manager informed that the team will have a few practice sessions in Guyana before going to Nevis since the planned practice match might not be played due to the rain in Guyana and the unavailability of the Guyana National Stadium outfield which it is understood is being prepared for the two One-Day matches involving England in Guyana on March 20 and 22.
Coach Albert Smith was also disappointed with his team’s performance this season against two of the perceived weaker teams in the seven-team competition.
“The young bowlers are learning and while they are not bowling badly they need to be more consistent at this level if they want to do well. Esuan Crandon has shown his experience while Brandon (Bess) has bowled with raw pace. I am also impressed with Davendra Bishoo but these youngsters need to work harder on the mental aspects of their cricket if we are to win matches,” Smith said.
The coach said that changes will be made for the next match since Leon Johnson and Bess will be unavailable for Guyana’s next match because of their commitments with the WI ‘A’ team.
“We have lost both of our games and go back home without a point so of course the team will be reviewed. We must remember that this team was picked for the first two matches and the selectors will have to sit down and come up with a squad for Guyana’s next two away matches,” Smith added.
Smith said that he is still not pleased that Guyana is not getting a solid foundation from the openers, which is putting pressure on the middle order. “Both (Shemroy) Barrington and (Krishna) Arjune were dismissed playing poor shots in this game while I think senior players like Leon has to be more responsible with their shot selection. We have lots of talent but we need to be more matured as players at this level,” Smith explained.
It is not yet clear if the selection panel will be the same if the executive of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) is changed after Sunday’s elections as Guyana prepare for their next match from January 30.
