The Guyana Taekwondo Association (GTA) has recently issued two of its latest members, Hewley Clarke who turns 25 in June and Orlando Van-Rossum who turns 14 in February with their Internationally Recognised First Dan Black Belt Certificates which came directly from the World Taekwondo Federation Headquarters in Seoul Korea.
Van-Rossum, who becomes the youngest member of the GTA to be issued with this International Certificate, has proven that success comes from hard work.
He has been an active and competitive member of the GTA since the tender age of 4 1/2 years old. Van-Rossum has represented Guyana on numerous occasions at the regional and international levels, the most recent being the 4th Dando Cup where he attained two (2) Gold and Silver Medals.
According to a Press Release from the GTA, Van-Rossum’s mother has been a tower of strength behind his success, being present every training day with him. The release further stated that she has always insisted on Orlando being a well rounded and mannered individual making sure that he is always striving for success in the sport as well as his academics. He has always been a top 5 student in his class.
His mother also insisted on him attending church, where he is now a part of the church’s Youth Group, an usher and also an active member of the church’s steel band. He also takes great pleasure in Swimming.
Both Clarke and Van-Rossum are showing great promise to the GTA as potential competitors for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in England.
