Dear Editor,
Be it me or any other contributor to your letter columns via your respective newsprints, we are all subject to constructive criticism from readers, and it’s an avenue wherein one expresses one’s opinions, suggestions, ideas, guidance etc.
After letters are vetted by respective editors and published, I tend to take a realistic approach whenever I choose to respond, and in no way do I intend to offend anyone. Of course, I am not an investigating officer, nor do I have any facts surrounding the pending case of the deceased, so does Mrs. Serrao in the published KN report dated January 6, 2009.
I choose to respond to the writer’s article for it was and still is my opinion that the approach in seeking justice is not healthy recommendation, from what I read. None of us knows for a fact that the late husband of Mrs. Serrao would have taken the approach to investigate the murder of his son and make arrests, and I am certain that there are procedures that have to be adhered to within the Guyana Police Force.
The Force can also correct me, but I also don’t think that it is a wise decision for immediate family members to conduct any investigation pertaining to a crime, because of the conflict of interest that will be caused.
However, it is my belief that the Force will welcome any information, and the responsible investigators will work with them in trying to solve a crime.
When any case reaches a dead end, it automatically becomes a “Cold Case”, and yes, there are many to talk about.
Guyana has its fair share of problems within its Police Force, I also believe that many within the Force have been “compromised”, and as a matter of fact, it will forever be there; and sometimes we have just got to accept what is available, be thankful for whatever is offered, and move on with life.
For us to have a much more improved police system, it is for the administration of the day and the opposition to deal with that aspect of the system. Wouldn’t you agree?
Mrs. Serrao, I have never learnt of any justice system that convicts a felon on hearsay; and it’s evidence, witnesses and forensic proof from an investigation that one is convicted on; and there is absolutely nothing that none of us can do if we can’t have a conviction of someone who might be as guilty as sin.
Unless one chooses to take an eye for an eye, and this is where matters get even more complicated. Don’t you agree?
No disrespect to Mrs. Serrao, but you need to come to terms with the fact that your case is a “Cold One” and having constant dreams of your son in no way means or is interpreted that his soul is not at peace. Where was that ever written or taught?
In closing, I truly hope that you will eventually find closure, and I will no longer respond to this subject.
T. Pemberton
