Yesterday, in the court of acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, members of the City Constabulary, Sherwin Smith, 35, Lindon Isaacs, 38, of 72 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown; and Neil Hernandes, 49, of 444 Fourth Street, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, were slapped with the charges of assault causing bodily harm, and the unlawful and malicious damage to property.
The men, who were all members of the City Constabulary, allegedly wounded Mark Kendall on June 1, 2008.
They also faced the additional charge of unlawfully and maliciously damaging Kendall’s property.
The victim said that they punched him in his face and knocked out a tooth from his mouth. Also accused and present in court were Paulette Devonish, 35, a Lance Corporal, who is also stationed at the City Constabulary Headquarters, City Hall, and of 1 A West La Penitence; as well as Paula Jones, 41, a Constabulary officer stationed at the Stabroek Police Outpost, who resides at 50 Bagotville, West Bank Demerara.
They were both charged with assaulting Denise Fredericks, Kendall’s wife. They pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Their lawyer asked that they be granted bail in a reasonable sum, noting the fact that they are employed by City Police and that on the day in question they were just ‘executing’ their duties.
The magistrate placed the three men on $50,000 bail each for the charges of assault, and $25,000 each for the unlawful damage to property.
Devonish and Jones were each placed on $20,000 bail.
The five are to return to court on February 26 next.
