Dear Editor,
Jerome Khan seems to have a penchant when it comes to telling PNCR supporters, who he once identified with very proudly, how to behave, particularly when it comes to resistance to the PPP/C.
This is not the first time he has come out condemning PNCR actions that are appropriate and supported by the masses. What I find alarming is that his valued silence was not broken when the PPP/C passed the Trades Union Bill and during other significant PPP/C blunders over the past three years.
Jerome finds it convenient to break his silence as the PNCR condemns the appointment of a Police Chief. Yet Jerome Khan only sees it fit to break his treasured silence to condemn the PNCR and not the PPP/C.
Jerome Khan was silent as he, like Subhan, held onto a parliamentary seat thus preventing anyone from being substituted and further effectively reducing the PNCR strength in parliament. He was silent as he claims for the past few years. Why break it now?
So who is Jerome Khan speaking to and for, whose interest is he representing? Jerome Khan could not be speaking for the thousands of families who are waiting on an inquest report, for their children’s body to be found, for justice against extra judicial killings and for narco criminals to be prosecuted.
He could not be speaking for those who see a morphing dictatorship, nor those who feel marginalised and oppressed, see the PPP/C corruption of public offices and erosion of trust. He is not speaking for the masses of PNCR supporters now or then.
The bottom line of this is obvious. The oppressed are the ones who will feel for their own and whereas those who empathize with us or join in our struggles are welcomed, we cannot rely on ‘others’ to define our reality and hence our pain. The oppressors and their various supporters or beneficiaries and those who are not victims of the oppressors will never feel the pain of the oppressed. They must not therefore determine or be the architects of our responses as they do not safeguard our interests and rights.
Further, whereas many may have a difficulty with Mr. Corbin’s stewardship of the PNCR and its legacy, there is common ground as it relates to the appointment and concerns surrounding senior police officers. No doubt the PPP/C is establishing a Gestapo type police force and we should resist.
We should hold Mr. Corbin/the PNCR accountable to move beyond registering comments for the record only and to undertake serious lobbying against these appointments.
