Two suspects have reportedly been detained in connection with the Plaisance robbery and shooting of businessman Anthony Cummings, which occurred last Friday.
A relative of the man told Kaieteur News that the two suspects are presently being detained at the Sparendaam Police Station.
When contacted, officers of the Sparendaam Police Station did not confirm that the suspects were in custody for the shooting. The officers only went as far as to say that, “We have two persons in custody,” but refused to divulge if it was in connection with the Plaisance shooting.
Anthony Cummings was shot early Friday morning, just as he had locked up his place of business at Lot 40-41 Ben Profit Drive, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara. He remains a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in a stable condition.
Cummings had related to this newspaper that he had just finished closing his business, which he operates in the lower flat of his home, when he was confronted by three gun-toting bandits.
He said that the bandits were wearing Halloween masks which where white.
He said that everything had happened so fast, and he could not remember if the bandits had shot then robbed him, or the other way around.
The bandits fired a single gunshot, which hit Cummings in the region of his back. They then made good their escape. The man was also relieved of $30,000 cash which was in his possession.
Cummings was rushed to the hospital by a close friend, where doctors at the institution quickly removed the bullet.
However, he was of the opinion that the robbery may have been a “set up” by persons whom he knows.
He added that, after he was shot, persons were seen “peeping through their windows” but did not render any assistance to him.
Cummings said that he considers himself lucky since, many times, in similar situations, the victims do not come out alive.
