A magnificent maiden century from 21-year-old Barbadian Nekoli Parris put the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) in a commanding position against Guyana when bad light stopped play at 17:40hrs with 2.4 overs left to be bowled on the penultimate day of their four-day regional First-Class cricket match at the 3Ws Oval.
At the close, Guyana set 319 to win from 11 overs on the third day and the entire final day, were 30-1 off 8.2 overs with West Indies player Leon Johnson on 21 and Krishna Arjune on nine and their team 289 runs away from victory.
Guyana, replying to CCC’s 265 were bowled out 18 minutes into the day’s play after adding just 10 runs to their overnight 237-8 with Derwin Christian being last dismissed for 52.
Fast bowler Kevin McLean grabbed a career best 5-49 for CCC who declared at 300-5 (their first 300 total at this level) just before the close as Parris decorated his 105 with nine fours and a six. Parris batted for 210 minutes and 200 balls and added 94 for the fourth wicket with Jamaican Wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton who hit three fours and a six from 70 balls and 114 minutes in his unbeaten 51.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul took 2-25 and leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo 2-115 for the Guyanese who lost opener Shemroy Barrington for a second-ball duck when he played a nondescript shot at Khismar Catlin. He was caught off the back of his bat at mid-off with just two runs on the board leaving the South Americans, still without a point in the competition, the huge task off batting out the final day to save the match.
Earlier, Guyana resumed the penultimate day on 237-8 needing another 29 runs for first innings points and were bowled out when Christian was caught behind off McLean.
Christian, who cut off-spinner Ryan Austin for his fifth boundary to post his second fifty at this level, batted for 130 minutes, faced 70 balls and also hit a six as he added five to his overnight score.
Permaul (12) was leg before to McLean at 240-8 while Brandon Bess was left unbeaten on two.
Catlin (2-65) and Austin (2-50) supported McLean as CCC took first innings points in their opening game for the season.
CCC began their second innings in brilliant sunshine and watched by a small crowd, reached 50 with sensible batting as Romel Currency played the supporting role to the left-handed Simon Jackson who pulled both Esuan Crandon and Bess for confident boundaries on a track still good for batting. By lunch, CCC were 95-0 with Currency on 28 and Jackson on 47 and the lead 113.
The hard working Esuan Crandon removed Jackson in the first over after lunch to make the break-through on 95-1. Jackson’s 47 followed up his first innings 45 and lasted 118 minutes, 87 balls with five fours.
Parris, in his second first-class season, joined Currency who was willing to use his feet to the spinners and looked better as his innings progressed.
Currency was dropped at cover; low to his left by Narsingh Deonarine off Bishoo on 38, but the stylish right-hander continued to use his feet before pushing meekly forward to Bishoo to be taken by Barrington at silly mid-off to leave the score on 139-2.
He hit four fours from 105 balls and 169 minutes as he fell seven short of his fifty.
Kirk Wilkinson and fellow Barbadian Parris, who favored the sweep shot, joined forces and took the score to 180 before Wilkinson (9) retired hurt when he was struck on his finger from a bouncer from Bess who again bowled with lively pace on a flat track.
The experienced Floyd Reifer (6) was trapped leg before to Bishoo at 189-3 just before Tea at which time the hosts were 190-3 with Parris unbeaten on an attractive 60 and Chadwick Walton yet to score.
After the break Walton was miss-stumped off Bishoo before he had scored as Dowlin used Bishoo from the South and the pace of Bess and Crandon from the North.
Walton dumped Deonarine for a straight six on top of the Media Centre as CCC looked to press on to extend their lead with positive batting.
Parris soon reached his third fifty and passed his previous highest score of 75 as he continued to bat attractively in sweltering heat.
Parris was pinned down on 98 for a long time before reaching his century with a crunching punch to the cover boundary off Permaul. His ton took 190 balls, 202 minutes and was decorated with nine fours and a six.
His body language suggested that he relaxed after reaching his ton on home soil and was trapped leg before to Permaul at 283-4 to break the 94-run fourth wicket partnership.
Walton, a solid 23-year-old, soon reached his third half-century at this level while Catlin (8*) got going with a massive six off Bishoo before the declaration was made.
Guyana started badly when Barrington threw his wicket away with an impetuous shot leaving a lot of work to be done by the rest of the batsmen today on a track which still looks good for batting.
