NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE — Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha said that flood waters receded in all areas that were affected.
According to Mustapha, the Administration is in the process of preparing an assessment of losses across East Berbice /Corentyne.
From December 18th 2008 to January 5th, 2009, 38 inches of rainfall were recorded in Region Six.
The areas most affected were from Number Forty-Six Village to New Amsterdam, including Black Bush Polder, East and West Canje, and the East Bank of Berbice.
The amount of water lodged on the land was too much for the drainage capacity, which is designed to handle only one and a half inches of water within a 24-hour period.
As a result of that, more resources were mobilised to assist in getting the water off the land.
Additional pumps were placed in areas around Number Nineteen Village, Chesney, Rose Hall Town, Port Mourant, Letter Kenny, Whim, Liverpool, Number Fifty-One Village/Leeds, Numbers Sixty-Five, Sixty-Seven and Seventy-Three Villages; along with Adelphi, Cumberland and Canefield.
