– proposal with Sports Commission
By Edison Jefford
The National Sports Commission will be making a strategic move to secure a future male basketball team through a standard high school basketball championships scheduled to commemorate this year’s Republic Day.
A source close to the commission told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that ground work for the proposal were completed this week and that the document is to be submitted to National Director of Sport, Neil Kumar for approval.
“They are trying to get it run–off to celebrate Mash (Republic Day celebration). It is not fully formalised because of Kumar’s approval,” the source said, adding that the document should get the green light from the Director.
Should the schools’ basketball project prove a success, the Sports Commission that comes under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will take a significant step toward returning the sport to schools.
This newspaper understands that the competition was the brainchild of Kumar, who gave two officials from his office the mandate of coordinating the event–one of whom has tons of experience in basketball management.
While known, this newspaper is not at liberty to disclose the identity of those officials but sources outside the loop that are equally important to the success of the tournament were questioned about their availability to work.
In addition, a budget for the staging of the entire event was also done and will be given to Kumar for ratification as well. The proposal along with the budget was to be submitted to the Director of Sport today at latest.
After the document gets pass Kumar, the identified schools will be sent invitations so that their teams can properly enter. The competition is supposedly part of the establishment of a proper selection criterion for the national team.
“I think they want to use the tournament as a yardstick for the IGG (Inter–Guiana Games) and it might also be used to set up proper selection criteria,” the confidant observed. IGG was cancelled prematurely last year.
