Nurses at the Georgetown Public Hospital are at present planning a major strike, according to a source within the hospital. The source further told this newspaper that the majority of the nurses at the institution are “unpleased” with hospital authorities after they failed to receive their “retroactive or back pay”.
One nurse told Kaieteur News that it was totally unfair for “one of the main pillars in society to be treated in this way”. The woman further explained that nurses at the Georgetown Public Hospital are working under strenuous conditions without the relevant amenities.
She added that on a daily basis nurses are being harassed and threatened by both patients and relatives. In most cases, when nurses take a “stand” against this they could be “sanctioned or dismissed”. One recent example of this treatment was seen last week when a male patient slapped a nurse and choked her. In self defence, the nurse picked up an empty bottle and hit the patient.
After the incident the nurse was promptly “dismissed by the matron” of the hospital. The nurse said that Chief Executive Officer Michael Khan was the one who is supposed to dismiss any hospital official “not including doctors”, but the matron has since taken up that position. Efforts to contact a representative from the Guyana Public Service Union were futile.
However, when this newspaper contacted the Chief Executive Officer Michael Khan he said that the nurses do not seem to understand what was said by the government. He said that there would not be any retroactive payments for nurses who earn less than $50,000 monthly. Khan further told this newspaper that the government had said that those persons who are paid over $50,000 would get an additional five per cent. He noted that nurses who were below the $50,000 margin would get an additional $4,000 added into their salary.
Khan explained that the additional $4,000, which was granted as cost of living relief, was to have expired, but after January 1, 2009, Government said that the $4,000 would remain as a permanent fixture in the nurse’s salaries.
The CEO further disclosed that the nurses where paid yesterday with all the additions into their respective salaries.
Khan said that all senior personnel were paid their five cent additions and the lower ranking nurses and officials were given their additional and permanent $4,000 into their salary.
He said that instead of nurses seeking an explanation, they jump to the “radical”. He said that the hospital’s payroll is one of the most balanced and efficient systems of payment that he knows.
