Dump site ‘pickers’ must be supervised

Dear Editor,
I write to bring to your attention and at the same time that of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown.
I am a young woman who operates a business in the city of Georgetown and trade in the import of tinned food stuff.
On Sunday January 4th 2009, I went to the Mayor and City Council land fill site and dumped a quantity of expired tinned corn, which I can easily recognise since my trader’s making was placed on them.
On Monday January 5th 2009, while doing some shopping down town, in the Stabroek Market area, about 19:30hrs, a young man came up and offered to sell me a few tins of the said corn which I had dumped the day before.
This happened, I believe, because the persons who are allowed to operate on the landfill site as ‘pickers’ are unsupervised. Consequently, the way is clear for anything that is dumped to be brought back into the streets for human consumption.
I, therefore, ask that your department do something in this regard so that we can create a cleaner and healthier city for all.
