Guyana aim to rebound against CCC from today

West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon will strengthen the Guyana batting when the South Americans, who lost by an innings and 147 runs against the Windward Islands last Sunday, battle the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) at the 3Ws Oval here in Barbados from today.
The 27-year-old left-hander, who suffered another failure in the fifth and final ODI in New Zealand last Monday night (Caribbean time), will open the batting with Shemroy Barrington who scored the most runs for Guyana in his debut game and looked very solid before failing to build on scores of 20 and 32.
Krishna Arjune could lose his place after just a solitary match after the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has conceded to Chattergoon’s request to play today.
The squad, which was selected for the first two games, will now be increased to a 14-man party and none of the originally selected players will be paid less since it is understood that Chattergoon, who was scheduled to arrive in Barbados yesterday evening, has agreed to play this game for free.
While Chattergoon’s inclusion will give the Guyana batting (which just managed 172 and 95 in the first match) much needed fire-power, it will also give Guyana’s latest test player an opportunity to salvage his fledging International career ahead of the home series against England which starts next month with big scores in this match.
On a track expected to offer some early pace and bounce, the Guyanese will need to dig deep mentally in their batting display against a team only in its second season at this level and apart from Chattergoon, Skipper Travis Dowlin, Narsingh Deonarine and Leon Johnson will be expected to score the bulk of the runs.
In Grenada Deonarine got a good ball in the first innings and was unlucky to be leg before in the second, while Dowlin hit a fighting first innings fifty before a loose drive to cover orchestrated his demise for one in his second innings.
Johnson, just back from the Test series in New Zealand, played an irresponsible shot to get out in the first innings before he edged a beauty from Deighton Butler to slip for a first ball duck and like Chattergoon he will be keen to stake a claim for a West Indies re-call.
The Crandon siblings (Royston and Esuan) got starts in the opening game and will want to carry on in Barbados while Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian will need to produce a vastly improved showing with both bat and gloves if he hopes to keep his place in the side for the entire duration of this long season. The experienced Esuan Crandon bowled well in Grenada but while young Brandon Bess bowled with genuine pace on a slow track he lacked control, while rookie spinners Davendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul bowled well in spurts but lacked guile and consistency. With a young Guyana bowling attack they will have to learn fast.
Despite their loss, the Guyanese looked a happy united bunch of players eager to rebound in Barbados and arrived here on Tuesday afternoon.
“We had a good net session in Grenada on Monday and worked on our flaws in the nets this week in Barbados and the guys are all in high spirits and confident of doing well here.
I think our loss in Grenada was a wake up call and even without Chanderpaul and Sarwan who are unavailable, I expect the team to do much better here,” Manager Carl Moore said.
When the teams last met, Chanderpaul, the only batsman with a triple century since sponsored regional first-class cricket began in 1966, scored 207 and Johnson 94 at Providence last year as Guyana reached 421 to take first innings points in the drawn match.
Joel Noel took 6-101 for CCC who fell for 151 as Bishoo took 5-29 on debut. Bishoo took both wickets to fall as CCC, following on reached 96-2 when the game ended.
This is the first match this season for CCC, while defending champions Trinidad and Tobago, who took first innings points from Barbados in the first round, face Jamaica who beat the Leewards by six wickets from today in Trinidad. Barbados battle the Windwards in Grenada in the other second round match.
