Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Charles Court (third from left) with members of Help and Shelter and Airy Hall Development Group yesterday.
The Canadian High Commission yesterday donated over $3.4M to two local non-governmental organizations that provide support for women and children living in violent homes.
Canada’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Charles Court, signed the contribution agreements with Help and Shelter and Airy Hall Development Group.
The agreements will pave the way for the provision of necessary support to the project initiatives of the two organizations through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).
Help and Shelter has received $1,436,000 to acquire four computers and other pieces of electronic equipment that will be used for its hotline programme, its face-to-face and court-support counselors, and also to facilitate research and efficient data compilation.
The Airy Hall Development Group has been awarded $1,970,000 for a 12-month project, to train facilitators to work with victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, host seminars, lectures and counseling sessions for students and teachers, and develop and distribute information pamphlets and posters on the Essequibo Coast.
Violence against women and children is a widespread problem in the society, and is three times as prevalent among rural women as among urban women, a recently released multiple cluster survey indicated.
Yesterday the High Commissioner said that Canada is delighted to support two civil society groups that have been working to mitigate the effects of this problem across Guyana.
