Buxton United Football Club (BUFC), the 2008 East Demerara Football Association senior champions has answered the call issued by the Blood Bank, eleven members of the club including their Head Coach donating 11 units of blood yesterday.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday at the National Blood Transfusion Unit at the Georgetown Hospital, Head Coach Lyndon France disclosed that the club has plans to make this donation an annual happening.
“We started this back in 1999-2000 when one of our players, Kester Dorsette broke one of his legs and need two units of blood to undergo an operation at the time. The then head of the Blood Bank decided to give the blood with a promise from us that we will get our club members to donate and we fulfilled that promise when 12 members donated.”
The club, which has an average age of 20, encountered some challenges with their senior players during the ensuing years after 2000 and decided to rebuild with players 15 years and under.
They have now grown up France reminded and have restarted the commitment of donating the much needed live saver. The players said they were very happy to be doing such a great service for their fellow Guyanese and commended the staff (Nichola Toney, Yonette Jeffrey, Pauline Marshall and Vanessa Darlington) that were very courteous and made them feel relaxed. They all promised to donate as often as they can.
Chief Technician (ag) Christopher Assanah, commended the efforts by the club in stepping forward at critical time when their stocks are well below what it should be.
“Presently we are in a crisis with the blood supply being very low, just coming out of the Christmas Holiday so what is happening now is that we are not able to meet our demands supplying the regional or the private hospitals, so any supply of blood right now helps our situation.”
Assanah said he is encouraging members of the public, corporations and other institutions to give freely and to know that when they do that they are helping to save many lives.
“You might not know who you are helping, but you are helping somebody and who knows, it might be your own.”
Kaieteur sport is also joining the call and encouraging sportsmen and women to donate especially since they are now in the off season.
