Yesterday during a simple ceremony at its New Market Street location, Republic Bank, in association with the University of Guyana, awarded the two winners of the ‘Republic Bank/University of Guyana Awards’.
The two awardees were Ms. Khafka Alexander who earned the Republic Bank Limited Chairman’s Award for Best Graduating Student with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Ms. Kenesha Collins who copped the Republic Bank Limited Award for the Best Graduating Student with a Diploma in Banking and Finance. The awardees received cheques for G$150,000 and G$100,000 respectively, and a plaque in recognition of their efforts.
Receiving the award on behalf of Ms. Alexander was UG’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Tota Mangar.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Republic Bank’s Branch Operations Manager, Denise Hobbs said that the occasion marked a ‘special day’ for the bank in that they were all gathered to duly reward the top performers in the Social Sciences. She said that the bank notes that the area of study chosen by both students greatly impacts the financial industry.
Hobbs noted that her entity continues to make significant investments in Guyana’s future through youth development, indicating that these investments are captured under the Bank’s Community Outreach Programme, “the Power to Make a Difference, the Power to Learn and Succeed”.
She said Republic Bank recognizes that the successes in education result in long term benefits to society and the nation on the whole, and as such, gladly accepts its responsibility to support and reward future leaders.
She emphasized that the University of Guyana can attest to the bank’s continued commitment as they have been partners on a number of initiatives.
Given this fact, she said the bank takes great pride in acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the two top performers. Khafka Alexander was the best graduating student with a Bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences, obtaining a pass with distinction, while Ms. Kenesha Collins was the best graduating student with a diploma in Banking and Finance, also obtaining a pass with distinction.
In his presentation, Senior Credit Manager, John Alves, thanked all for attending the event, noting that the Republic Bank/University Awards presentation has become part of the bank’s culture and brings great joy to the entity to be able to support young standouts.
He said that Ms. Alexander and Ms. Collins have both dedicated their time and energies to achieving great success and wished them the best in their future endeavours, expressing hope that their accomplishments inspire others along the way.
Ms. Collins noted that she was happy to have received the award and encouraged her peers to work just as hard to attain similar success.
