Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me some space in your widely read newspaper to clarify some utterances in Affeeze Khan’s so-called reply to a proper, professional, very explicit article by sports reporter Michael Benjamin.
Firstly, please allow me to quote a proverb, “It is better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove any doubt.”
This writer is the very, very person who suggested and nominated this “outstanding salesman,” who has now evolved into a dictator to become president of GABA. (I now ponder who has bitten the hand that fed). I made the nomination based upon the person previously known to me. There was absolutely no knowledge of the ‘new’ person. I also prepare my own letters etc.
Let me assure you Mr. Editor, I am a firm believer in democracy, transparency and accountability. Clearly these traits would not be appreciated by a dictator.
Here are some examples of his dictatorial behavior. Mr. Seibert Blake was unanimously voted to be the coach to the CAC games in Colombia in 2006. He changed that. It was decided that the next coach to be sent on a course should be Mr. Dirk Alexander of Linden; unknown to anyone else Evan Parris, who had long departed from the sport was sent to Cuba, in a cunning underhand manner.
Of what benefit to boxing is that? (Please let him explain)
He has done everything possible to sideline Mr. Lennox Daniels the most successful coach of the present crop, perhaps in Guyana ever in this sport.
Let me now deal with transparency. Notices, minutes, invitations, etc. were always punctual when this writer was secretary (he now describes me as a miscreant’ and a square peg’ with help of course). Through proper lobbying I secured three free tickets for the aforementioned CAC Games.
Reports to and from GOA meeting were always delivered promptly. Does this still happen?
An invitation for discussion at his home’ was extended to me once. Upon arrival, I realized that it was a -secret meeting,’ arranged by him to discuss changes he wanted to make to the points system for championships. I promptly opposed it and made it known that I would not be participating in any other meeting at his home. I stressed that meetings must be held at a neutral venue.
The selection committee of which I was chairman was disbanded at a secret meeting’ at his home. The same fate befell the disciplinary and financial committees. These meetings no doubt continued resulting in the ‘degutting’ of the executives aptly described by Mr. Benjamin.
In relation to accountability let Affeeze state what happened to the monies accrued from the fund raising efforts at Stabroek Market Square and Harpy Eagles Gym? Let him also state in whose name and address is the motorcycle donated to GABA registered. The audited statement submitted to the Ministry includes tickets bought for boxers and officials including in the tally no doubt would be Mr. Patterson and myself who paid our own passage.
Isn’t that fraud?
I am also quite sure the name of his friend’s wife would be described as an official if ever mentioned (CABA) 2007.
Finally Mr. Editor, encourage him to read and learn more about the sport; Clive Atwell’s bronze medallist, (whom he came and met) at the 2007 Pan Am games is just one in a long line of many achieved at this level.
Among the numerous silver and bronze medals Guyana have achieved at these an other big games include Carl Crawford, 1959, Kenny Bristol, 1975, my neighbor Stephen Rose and present coach Terrence Poole bronze each in 1991, Alfred Thomas, Wesley Christmas et al.
We also won gold at Commonwealth 1978 Winfield Braithwaite, silver Courtney Atherley, and Wencel Thomas CAC. Gold medals at Olympic box-offs by Andrew -Sixhead’ Lewis and Dillon Carew.
Amateur boxing has always achieved medals at big games. This is nothing new as inferred by Khan. Indeed anyone would be dissatisfied with leadership that includes fraud, corruption, dishonesty and deception. I am willing to defend anything I have written at any forum.
Yours respectfully,
K. Campbell
