As the team from the Ministry of Health continues visiting communities and schools around the city, several schools have been reopened as they have been declared safe for students and teachers to return.
On Monday last, South Ruimveldt Nursery, South Ruimveldt Primary, South Ruimveldt Secondary, Cummings Lodge Secondary and St. Barnabas Special School were reopened. The schools were all opened after being closed for some period due to flooding in the area, and in some cases, at the schools.
In an interview with this newspaper, Chief Medex, Morris Jeffrey, who is heading the programme, said evaluations were done at these schools, following which they were all reopened.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey said that the team will be stepping up the exercise as they would at least like to visit three schools per day.
“We are working with limited resources in almost every community and we hope to do as much as we could now that the rain has eased,” Jeffrey said.
He added that the team is also working closely with the Ministry of Education as they continue to keep in close contact with the health team.
“The Education Ministry has been working along with us and keeping us up to date as it relates to schools which are affected by flood waters,” Jeffrey explained.
Apart from visiting the schools, the team has also been visiting flooded communities dealing with flood-related illnesses.
According to Jeffrey, while the community clinics are still functioning, the team has been visiting the backlands of most communities. During these visits, Jeffrey said, the team has been making diagnoses and dispensing drugs.
“The most common illnesses we are being confronted with include cold, coughs, skin rashes, diarrhoea, vomiting and some cases of conjunctivitis,” Jeffrey said.
He informed that the team is made up of one doctor, a nurse, a pharmacist, an assistant pharmacist and at least two volunteers. He added that apart from diagnosis and treatment, the team is also advocating preventative measures, as they have been distributing disinfectants, bleach and other cleaning agents to residents of the communities they visited.
So far, the team has visited communities including Buxton, Bee Hive, Dochfour, Industry, La Bonne Intention, Mon Repos, Pigeon Island, Better Hope, and Hope Estate, among others.
Meanwhile, the team is expected to visit the Tucville Nursery and Primary Schools sometime later today.
As the rainy season continues, the team will be visiting various affected communities.
