Four committees named
The Berbice Cricket Board of Control met on Sunday last and appointed six executive members in keeping with constitutional requirements following their just concluded Annual General Meeting.
Members to the selection (senior & junior), special events & development and finance & marketing committees were also named.
Long standing Secretary / CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster was appointed Public Relations Officer (a non executive position) with journalist Samuel Whyte as one of two deputy PRO’s.
The appointed executive members are former national player and cricket coach Hubern Evans, Accountant Martin Singh of Associated Business Services, Owen Williams Cricket Manager of the Scotsburg First Division team, Julian Cambridge, Qualis Winter and Carl Moore, chairman of the competitions committee who will also serve as the other deputy PRO.
The other members of the competitions committee are David Black, Keith Hicks, Carol Nurse and Winston Smith.
The finance & marketing committee is headed by Third Vice President Ricardo Bachan and the members are Hilbert Foster, Mark Lyte, Anil Beharry, Martin Singh, Kerwin Thomas and Romesh Munna.
The senior cricket selection committee is headed by long serving selector Mark Lyte, a former first division all rounder. Coach and former cricketer Winston Smith and former West Berbice Division One Player Julian Cambridge are the two members.
Leslie Solomon, nephew of former Test Player Joe Solomon, heads the junior
selection committee which has as its members, former national player and West Indies Under 19 captain Andre Percival, former Blairmont division one leg spinner Moses Samlall and Rose Hall Canje first division all rounder, Romesh Munna.
The special events and cricket development committees were merged and Hilbert Foster was appointed as the chairman with Marl Lyte as deputy. The other members are Gregory Rambarran, Anil Beharry, David Black, Carol Nurse, Ramesh Jagasar, Samuel Whyte, Zaheer Moakan, Dhieranidranauth Somwaru, Angela Harry and Michael Hyles.
The nine representatives to the Guyana Cricket Board are Keith Foster, David Black, Mark Lyte, Ricardo Bachan, Angela Haniff, Carol Nurse, Anil Beharry, Romesh Munna and Hubern Evans.
In making the appointments, BCBC President Keith Foster noted that over the years numerous committees were appointed but the members did not function the way they ought to. This motivated the decision to move away from having a top heavy executive with many persons but rather to appoint individuals based on their ability and proven track record of getting things done.
The BCBC is hoping that this team will work collectively in making their Board the most dynamic in Guyana. “You can craft the future of cricket in Berbice and we need you to work beyond the call of duty at all times with no looking over your shoulders for personal rewards.”
Foster challenged his executives and appointed members as well as those serving on the various committees, to dedicate themselves to the difficult task of returning the sport to glory days of the 60’s and 70’s.
He also noted that cricket was in decline in the county and urged his colleagues to be positive role models to players and officials in the Ancient County using the trusted and proven formula of hard work, dedication, discipline, honesty and proper planning to achieve.
At last Sunday’s meeting which lasted over five hours, a number of major decision were arrived at with the aim of raising the bar in the county especially in the field of discipline on and off the field, playing more tournaments at the junior level, appointment of a permanent discipline and appeals committee, incentives for cricket teams, realising a Berbice cricket academy, having guidelines for the selection of teams and the hosting of quarterly press conferences.
