Strong performances by eighteen year-old Guyana Defence Force Private Clevon Rock has placed him among the top contenders for the 2008 junior sports personality award.
Rock, who earned a silver medal at the Junior Commonwealth Games in Pune, India, produced a devastating display to record the fastest knockout in the competition which came after 41 seconds against Kenyan Kingstone Otieno.
Apart from that achievement, Rock, who started the year with victory in the trials to win selection to the Games, was also in impressive form, grabbing a gold medal at the Caribbean Junior and Cadet Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
The bantamweight boxer received special mention from the Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and the Director of Sport Neil Kumar, who both felt that he is a good prospect for the future and one worth investing in and someone who could go on to make Guyana proud in a few years time.
Speaking with Coach Terrence Poole, under whose guidance Rock has been honing his skills, the experienced national coach told Kaieteur Sport that he believes his charge is a special talent and should be given all the necessary support that is needed to ensure that he develops into one of the best amateurs in the world.
Poole’s assessment seemed consistent with earlier remarks made by President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Affeeze Khan, who also recognised Rock’s exceptional talent, promising to do all in his power to help the young boxer in his quest to become the best.
