Two armed bandits escaped with $1M in cash after beating and tying up their two female victims during a brutal attack at Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara, on Sunday afternoon.
Businesswoman Bhagwattie Surujpaul and her sister, Kamwattie, had to be treated at the West Demerara Hospital for wounds they received during the ordeal, which lasted for about 10 minutes.
In a press release, police said that their investigations have revealed that the two victims were in the process of closing their grocery store when they were confronted by the two men, who held them at gunpoint and took them into the store.
They were tied up and beaten about their bodies with the firearms by the men, who demanded cash.
Recounting the ordeal, Kamwattie told this newspaper that, at about 18:35 hours, she had just closed the front gate of their property while her sister had almost secured the shop when the bandits struck.
The woman said that, as she was about to close the door to the shop, someone from outside pushed it open.
At the time of the incident, the two women were the only occupants of the premises.
Two masked men then barged in, and one of them grabbed Kamwattie around her neck while the other confronted her sister.
“We start to holler. Dem ain’t say nothing, they just start beating we,” she told Kaieteur News.
She said that when they no longer had the strength to scream, the bandits took them further into the grocery and demanded cash.
“Dey ask we fuh US money and jewellery, and we tell them that we don’t have,” Kamwattie explained.
The men then opened a drawer in the shop and removed $1M. Before leaving, the bandits also used duct tape to bind the victims’ mouths and hands.
According to Kamwattie, several persons reported hearing them screaming, but were afraid to render any assistance. She said she received eight stitches for wounds she sustained at the hands of the bandits.
So far, no one has been arrested.
