President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Affeeze Khan has responded to an article appearing in last Sunday’s edition of the Kaieteur news, written by sports journalist Michael Benjamin.
Here is the full text of Khan’s reply:
“It is with much consternation that as the President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association I must reply to Mr. Benjamin banalities printed in the Kaieteur Newspapers on Sunday January 11, 2009.
I cannot fathom why individuals whom the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association brought out of the doldrums of the society and tried its best to mould and placed on a pinnacle of respectability would in turn want to bite the hand that fed them and see “the Association falls back into the unacceptable Status quo”. Instead it is expected that such would only want to promote and encourage the development of the Association. The Demonic Force spoken about can only come about because of the negative influences portrayed by these Miscreants.
As the President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, it is my hope that the Association would be able to have a gold medalist at the international level and until this happens, I would feel that I have failed in my leadership capacity of the Association. Under my leadership, as at the end of the year 2008, the association has already achieved a Bronze medal at the Pan American Games and a Silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Should I be re-elected to the post of President of the Association at the upcoming elections, then I can make a promise that I would push even harder to ensure that our country be recognized at the international level by having our amateur boxers win a Gold medal (Even if it is at the Olympic Games).
With this in mind, I cannot understand why Mr. Benjamin would suggest that a large percentage is dissatisfied with my style of leadership and is willing to see me go. I am still to see someone who will give more of their time and financial resource unselfishly towards the development of Amateur Boxing. It is because I do not look at myself as a failure that I have continued to work with the limited resources available to ensure that the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association continues to improve and stand out as one of the major sporting disciplines in Guyana.
I will not indulge Mr. Benjamin further other than to state that the three officials stated in his missive did not resign from the position held within the Association.
Since they appeared to be square pegs in round holes, the Executives of the Association had no other choice than to seek alternatives.
I can assure you that their replacements who are currently doing an excellent job in assisting in the administration of the association only took the position because of my adamant pleading for assistance to develop the sport of Amateur Boxing. Even though both gentlemen can be otherwise occupied, I am sure that they only make the sacrifice because they also want to see improvement in the sport.
It must be mentioned that an audited statement of account was submitted to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport for the $600,000.00 (Six Hundred Thousand dollars) that was given to the Association to be used to send a team to the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association tournament in 2007.”
Regards
Mr. Affeeze Khan
