Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, President Bharrat Jagdeo, has approved the promotions of 494 ranks of the Guyana Defence Force.
The list of promotions comprises 78 officers and 416 other ranks, and is effective from January 1, 2009.
Twenty-six officers and 162 other ranks were confirmed in their posts, while 52 officers and 254 other ranks were elevated in position.
Leading the promotions list are substantive Lieutenant Colonel Sydney C. James and acting Lieutenant Colonel G. Beaton.
Four Majors have been confirmed in their rank, while substantive Captains C. Byrne, L. Souvenir, M. Ramjag, C. Welch and Woman substantive Captain L. Foster have been promoted to acting Majors.
Four acting Captains and one substantive Lieutenant have been promoted to substantive Captain, while eight substantive Lieutenants, including one female, are now acting Captains.
Eleven acting Lieutenants have been made Substantive Lieutenants, while 17 Second Lieutenants, including two females, were elevated to the rank of acting Lieutenant.
Leading the Coast Guard promotions are acting Lieutenant Commanders (army equivalent Major), S. Harmon, V. Burnette and R. Charles.
Three officers have been confirmed in the rank of substantive Lieutenant, while three others have been elevated to acting Lieutenant.
One acting Sub-Lieutenant has been promoted to the rank of substantive Lieutenant.
In the GDF Reserve, substantive Majors Leslie Sobers, T Stuart and M. Nezamudeen have been promoted to acting Lieutenant Colonels, while substantive Captain I. Alli is now an acting Major.
In addition, one acting Captain has been confirmed as substantive Captain, and 10 substantive Lieutenants, including three females, are now acting Captains. One Second Lieutenant is now an acting Lieutenant.
Four hundred and sixteen other ranks have been promoted.
Of this amount, 162 have been confirmed in their rank, while 254 have been elevated in rank.
Leading these promotions are substantive Warrant Officers Class One (WO1), R. Lewis, T. Holder, R. Marks and Woman WO1 C Braithwaite.
The remaining 250 other ranks were promoted through ranks ranging from acting Warrant Officer Class One to acting Lance Corporal.
In the Coast Guard, two ranks were confirmed as Chief Petty Officers, one as Petty Officer, 11 as Leading Ratings, and nine as Able Ratings. Five others were promoted to acting Senior Petty Officers, one to acting Petty Officer, two to acting Leading Ratings, and 13 to acting Able Ratings.
Soldiers who are appointed to “substantive” (Sub) ranks have earned their confirmation in those ranks after previously holding the “acting” ranks.
