National distance athlete, Lionel D’Andrade leaves Guyana today ahead of the Annual Clico Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon scheduled for January 25, but will first compete in a 10km road run on Saturday.
The General Industrial and Supplies–sponsored athlete told Kaieteur Sport that he was training locally for the event despite the inclement weather. He said that he feels better prepared than last year when he placed eight.
“I was training all the time despite the constant rain and I am hoping to finish between first and third. I did a lot of work for this Marathon and hopefully it will pay off,” the regional campaigner told this newspaper.
D’Andrade, who campaigned in Trinidad and Tobago last year with much success, is expected to go a similar route this year. He said that the international marathon is the first of two marathons that he attempts every year.
The Trinidad event at the beginning of the year and Suriname marathon are interspersed with several 10k and 5km races. The lean road runner desperately wants to break Andrew Smith’s national marathon record this year.
Smith’s mark stands at 2:25:02 while D’Andrade did 2:35:00 in his eight placed finish at the 2008 Trinidad Marathon. He said that his conditioning will allow him to, at least, run 2:24:00 at the upcoming event in the Twin Islands. (Edison Jefford)
