Windwards record biggest first-class win

The Windward Islands recorded their biggest first-class victory when they crushed Guyana by an innings and 147 runs with over five sessions to spare on the penultimate day of their regional four-day cricket encounter at the National Stadium here in Grenada yesterday.
The emphatic victory was achieved 40 minutes before tea when Guyana fell for only their fifth total under a hundred at this level and the result bettered the Windwards’ 125-run win against the Leeward Islands a decade ago.
Set 242 to avoid an innings defeat after the home team declared at 414-9 an hour and 15 minutes before lunch, Guyana, who made 172 in their first innings, feared even worse in their second innings and fell for 95 off 26.3 overs.
Vincentian left-arm pacer Deighton Butler snatched 5-29 and got support from Dominican off-spinner Shane Shillingford who took 3-11 to follow up his first innings 4-43.
Grenadian Devon Smith who fell for 212, added 104 for the eight wicket with Shillingford who made a pugnacious 51 to frustrate the Guyanese before the declaration came when Smith was taken at mid-on off Esuan Crandon.
The West Indies Test opener, who took the Man-of-the-Match award, batting for 433 minutes, 335 balls and hit 18 fours and four sixes in a fantastic exhibition of scintillating stroke play.
The Windwards began the day on 377-7 looking to score quick runs and Guyana took the second new ball on a very good track for batting in hot conditions.
Shillingford (26 overnight), dominated the partnership with Smith yesterday and savagely cut Brandon Bess, who again bowled with genuine pace but with little control, for four in the day’s second over to bring the small crowd to life.
Esuan Crandon bowled gun-barrel straight to Smith and frustrated the left-hander with an impeccable line and length but Shillingford pulled Bess for four and then smashed him down the ground for another boundary off the next ball as he pitched up, forcing Skipper Travis Dowlin to replace him with left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul as runs leaked from the southern end.
Just after reaching his 50, Shillingford, who hit eight fours from 94 balls and 95 minutes in his 51, was caught at point off Permaul at 414-8 to end the 104-run partnership.
Smith fell six short of Junior Murray’s highest score at this level by a Windward Islands batsman when he was dismissed by the hard working Esuan Crandon at 10:45hrs at which time the declaration was made.
Bishoo, who did not bowl yesterday, finished with 3-89 while Esuan Crandon had 2-53 for the Guyanese who conceded their second consecutive 400-plus total to the Windwards following the 467 they made at Providence last year.
With the monumental task of scoring 242 to avoid an innings defeat with over five and a half sessions left in the match, Guyana began their second innings disastrously when Krishna Arjune (2) seemed very unfortunate to be given out leg before off Nelon Pascal at 2-1.
Guyana’s misery was compounded when Vice-Captain and West Indies left-hander Leon Johnson edged a beauty from left-arm pacer Deighton Butler to second slip off his first ball and Guyana, without a title at this level in seven years, were wobbling on 3-2.
Narsingh Deonarine, with four Tests under his belt, joined debutant Shemroy Barrington and cut Butler elegantly to the point boundary before he seemed very unlucky to be given leg before for five off the next ball as Guyana slumped to 14-3.
Dowlin, with a half-century in the first innings was then taken at short extra cover driving at the 34-year-old Butler for one to leave the score on 28-4.
Barrington and Royston Crandon carried their team to 31-4 by lunch with Barrington on 20 and Crandon on one and Guyana still 211 runs away from making the Islanders bat a second time.
After lunch Barrington, who again looked very compact, confidently pulled Pascal for four to post the Guyana 50 from 74 minutes.
Barrington was then painfully struck on his arm by a short ball from Butler who trapped him leg before next ball as Guyana slumped to 51-5. His 32 lasted 48 balls, 84 minutes and included four boundaries.
Dropped before he had scored by Butler off his own bowling, Derwin Christian (6) never suggested permanence and was soon caught behind off Sammy at 66-6 as the sub-standard Guyanese batting continued.
The Crandon siblings tried to repair the damage before Shillingford was introduced and had Esuan Crandon (2), Bishoo (4) and Permaul for a first ball duck, to leave the score on 83-9.
Bess got off the mark with a mighty six off Shillingford and Royston Crandon flicked Butler into the stands as the last pair prolonged the agony.
Butler then captured his second five-wicket haul at this level when Crandon was leg before for 31 to give the Windwards 12 points and leave Guyana with none as they prepare to face the Combined Colleges and Campuses in their next game in Barbados from Friday.
The Guyanese will practice today from 09:00hrs at the National Stadium before leaving for Barbados at 12:45hrs tomorrow.
