ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE — Bhigroog Poonai has been re-elected to serve as President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.
The election of office bearers was held recently at the Albion Community Centre.
The Vice President is Imran Hamid, while Krishnanand Raghunandan retained his position as Secretary for the fifth consecutive year.
Tajpaul Adjodhea was returned for his third term as Treasurer. Wayne Foster is the Assistant Treasurer, while Bibi Azeez is the Assistant Secretary. The Public Relations Officer is Adrian Anamayah.
Mr. Poonai is now serving his second term. On November 24, 2007, he took over the baton from Jadoonauth Persaud, who was at that time Manager of the Republic Bank at Rose Hall Town.
In outlining his plans for the 2008/2009 fiscal year, Mr. Poonai said his top priority is the completion of the Rose Hall Fire Station. This project is 85 percent complete.
With a bridge across the Berbice River, he is optimistic that the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair 2009 would be bigger this year.
He said that it is his hope that other business entities can be a part of the most vibrant body in the Central Corentyne area — the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.
According to him, with a vibrant membership, the chamber can achieve much more than it did since its establishment in November 2004.
This year, in observance of its fifth anniversary, the president of the organization is aiming for the commencement of another major community project.
To date, the members are looking at a number of suggestions on ways to improve the areas that fall within their catchment area.
According to Mr. Poonai, the chamber is willing to work with any agency or organization to improve the business environment in different fields, including human resources and security, and to promote healthy competitions inter alia.
The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce is also looking at creating the atmosphere to attract more investors, both locally and overseas.
With the bridge across the Berbice River in operation, Mr. Poonai is confident that new doors of opportunity would be opened to those in the Ancient County.
He described the investment in the construction of the bridge as a timely venture that would bring ease in terms of the movement of goods and services in and out of Berbice.
Representatives of the three chambers of commerce in Region Six — the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association, and the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce — are expected to hold discussions with the management of the Berbice River Bridge on a number of issues that are of concern to the business community.
