Dear Editor,
As an overseas-based Guyanese keeping tabs on what is happening in Guyana, I have been hearing a lot of talk about the Hope Outlet by the government and other engineering experts.
I am finally pleased that the government is making an extra effort for the people of the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Creeks and other East Coast residents to ensure this project becomes a reality. According to the experts, this alternative outlet from the conservancy to the Atlantic at Hope, E.C.D will greatly ease the pressure on the East Demerara Conservancy. This investment I am sure will worth its while.
In addition, the management of the conservancy will be more effective in controlling the water level and at the same time reduce the dependence of the Maduni and other outlets.
Hence, the farmers in Mahaica Creek and other vulnerable areas will not be affected, especially since the rainfall will only intensify which is a result of climate change affecting the world.
According to the newspapers, the funding for this massive $3 billion project will come from the 2009/2010 National Budget. This feat is commendable for us as a country to move forward. I do hope all the farmers and residents are taking note of the government’s commitment to ensure a better livelihood for all. By now, we all know that this project will come with a lost to many other initiatives for national development. However, I believe that the intended Hope Discharge Project is a priority right now and we will see the difference it will make.
I am pleased to learn that the project will not only be related to the conservancy, but the entire East Coast. This is an example of the kinds of strategic interventions and long term solutions that Guyana needs to progress as a country.
