Ten year old Narayan Ramdhani seems a strong candidate to feature in the deliberations of the panel that will select the junior sports personality of the year award for 2008 shortly.
The young Ramdhani, who is rated the No.1 Badminton player in the Under-11 category in the Caribbean, produced some outstanding performances both home and abroad and should be among the top choices for the prestigious prize.
The diminutive player, who also competes in other age groups, is ranked #2 in the region in the U-13 division.
Among his top achievements for last year includes: 1st place in both the U-11 and 13 categories and a 3rd place finish in the U-15 division at the Mashramani Junior Singles Tournament; 1st place finishes in the West Indian Sports Complex-sponsored tournament and runner-up in the U-15 category.
He then participated in the Caribbean Under-21 Club Cup International Championships held in Trinidad where nine (9) clubs attended and reached the semi-finals in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events, before returning home to grab the top spots in the U-11 and 13 segments and runner-up in the U-15 division at the Sterling Products-sponsored National Juniors.
Ramdhani then attended the Suriname Junior International Championships which saw five (5) countries participating and he captured three more titles, winning the U-11 singles, doubles and mixed doubles, while also finishing runner-up in the U-13 singles and placing third in the mixed doubles.
This year’s performances follow a display in 2007 and it is an indication that the young player continues to show the kind of commitment and skills that can make him develop into one of the best players in the Caribbean very soon.
