Nine more suspected ‘lepto’ cases at GPHC

Within the last two days, nine more persons have being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital with suspected leptospirosis.

According to hospital sources, over the space of a day, five new cases were admitted to the hospital, among them 15-year-old Zalima Baksh, of 15 Hogg Street, Albouystown, who was up to press time “vomiting blood”.

The others were identified as Anola Stephens, nine, of 319 Bachelor’s Adventure; Sarwan Khemchand, 47, of Cherry Field, La Bonne Intention; George McDonald, 47, of 21 Houston, East Bank Demerara; Juliet Kissoon, 55, of Ketley Street, Charlestown; Ryan Ramkipan, 37, of 18 Grove, East Bank Demerara; Royden Jackson, 17, of Supply, Mahaica; Onica Robertson, 24, of 34 Annandale, East Coast Demerara; and Bhiafan Blakaram, 45, of Ogle Railway Line.

Sources told Kaieteur News that there are many other persons who are suffering from the disease, but both hospital and ministry officials are trying to keep it “under wraps”.

This move, according to the source, is trying not to get persons alarmed, which would in turn lead to “panic”.

Residents are urged to follow all necessary precautions. They are also urged to follow up on “flu-like symptoms” which may be troubling them.
