Dear Editor,
The year 2008 had some of its worst moments in the latter part and many citizens of this land didn’t have the chance to enjoy the festive season due to the continued heavy rainfall. Many cries were heard from my fellow Guyanese as they beseech the help of Government to drain their areas so that they can enjoy the holidays free from contaminated waters. There were many visits from high ranking officials within the Government as seen on the television and other media and many promises were made.
Recently, I witnessed the presence of health officials in my area and then I realised that the officials are actually doing something to assist these persons. And further to that, I witnessed the presence of mobile pumps in my area which resulted in the drastic reduction of flood water.
I wish to say that when these promises are made by officials and Ministers of the Government and they are being realised immediately, residents like myself feel satisfied and a bit happy although the waters are surrounding the villages.
Driving to work this morning I witnessed that almost the entire East Coast of Demerara is free from water and this is a plus for our Drainage and Irrigation Department. I must commend them for their timely actions and responsiveness.
I hope that they keep these preparations in place because I still feel that the rains will continue to fall since we are still in the December/January rainy season. The authorities need to pay special attention to those persons living in the Mahaica/Mahaicony and Abary areas since they are the food producers for this zone and even Georgetown.
