Confident bowlers can restrict Windwards today
By Sean Devers in Grenada
Guyana’s Coach Albert Smith is disappointed with his team’s batting performance against the Windward Islands yesterday on the opening day of the regional four-day first class cricket series at the National Stadium here.
Smith however feels that his bowlers should be able to pull their team back into the game on the second day today by restricting the hosts to a lead of not too much more than 50.
“Apart from Deonarine, Barrington and Dowlin, all of the other batsmen threw their wickets away with poor shot selection and although we did not get any match practice before we left home, today’s (yesterday’s) batting was really disappointing,” Smith said.
The Berbician said that team spirit is very high and everyone was pulling together and once the team play to their game plan today and the bowlers bowl well, Guyana should be able to get back into the game.
“This is just the first day…..we have three days left and while we batted badly if we can restrict the Windwards to anything under 230 and bat well in our second innings we can set up a great chance of coming back to win the game,” he added
”We will be positive tomorrow but we hope to prevent (Devon) Smith from scoring too quickly and once we support each other I am confident that we can rebound,” Smith said.
Guyana fell for 172 and the Windwards were 20 without loss at the end of the first day but Guyana Coach feels that if Smith goes early there is not too much batting in the Windwards team although he said that Rawle Lewis and Liam Sebastian are capable with the bat and could be a worry.
“I hope our batters can focus better on staying longer at the crease and use their heads a bit more as they bat to meet different situations. Apart from the Skipper, Deonarine and young Barrington…we did not see that today (yesterday) from them,” Smith stated.
Today is the second day and play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs.
