MCY&S to spend $2.2M on fence
By Franklin Wilson
Villagers of the Buxton Community and its close environs are anxiously awaiting the completion of refurbishing works currently taking place at the Buxton Community Centre.
Thanks to a grant of 1.5 million Guyana dollars from UNICEF through its executing agent, the Girls Guides Association of Guyana, the Buxton Friendship Sports Development Committee is able to realise their dream of having a habitable facility for all to enjoy.
For quite some years the old facility has been in a state of disrepair but UNICEF has stepped up to the plate to ensure that the youths of the area enjoy comfortable amenities.
The project started in October of 2008 but had to be halted because of the inclement weather, however works are expected to resume as soon as the weather holds.
To date, the roof has been completed, internal walls to the dressing room while the external walls are about 95% complete. To be completed are the wash rooms and painting of the building.
In the recent past, the Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament Christmas Day fixtures were played at this facility but due to unfortunate situations it was discontinued and switched to Blairmont, West Coast Berbice. The organisers of the tournament had planned to make a grand return to this venue on December 22, 2008, the 19th edition of the tournament, but the bad state of the ground due to steady rainfall forced the games to be rescheduled for the Plaisance Community Ground, also on the Eats Coast.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, member of the committee, Lyndon France said the refurbishing of the facility is very welcome by the community and they are very grateful to UNICEF and the Girl Guides Association.
Both football clubs in the community will benefit as well as a number of basketballers, circle tennis players and athletes.
“This will enable the youths to be gainfully occupied and to develop their skills in the sport of their choice. They will be more comfortable and it creates the environment for the development in sport and in life generally.”
Looking ahead to continued development, France noted that they are aiming to expand by enclosing the bottom flat to accommodate a vocational training centre and gym.
“With the expansion, we would be able to help these youngsters with some literacy and numeracy skills and expose them to skills such as block making among others.”
He also informed that the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport has undertaken to refurbish the fence around the ground to the tune of 2.2 million dollars.
“The Ministry of Sports has already written to us informing that they have already approved this sum of money for repairs to the fence. This should have commenced in December but as a result of the weather it has been put on hold.”
This project again will also see members of the community chipping in to assist in its completion. Works will commence some time in the first quarter of this year.
