Political issues and the social structure of the Guyanese society were among the topics discussed on Thursday when Ambassador of the African Union of the Americas, Ms Amina Ali, paid a courtesy call on City Mayor Hamilton Green.
Sipping on chilled coconut water, Mayor Green and the envoy’s delegation spoke of circumstances which have the potential of suppressing progress.
During their discussions, the Tanzania-born Ambassador Ali informed Mayor Green that the African Union will soon be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Organisation of American States (OAS).
And commenting on the influence of the media, she added that one of the important factors required for a democratic society is the need for a free media fraternity.
Mayor Green spoke about the significance of educating young people, so that they could be aware of their historical backgrounds. Such education would also help them to better understand their role in society.
The ambassador’s delegation included Guyanese Professor Jocelynne Loncke, who pointed out that the African Union is the new name for the organisation which was once called the Organisation of African Unity.
She revealed that the members of the union include all the independent nations of Africa and a few that are not yet independent.
According to Professor Loncke, the various countries, through the Union, have gotten together for unity, cultural, political, and social advancement.
In essence, she asserted, the African Union is the equivalent of the European Union.
Ambassador Ali arrived in Guyana on Thursday, and in addition to the visit with Mayor Green, paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana and hosted a public meeting at the National Library.
Her visit here was preceded by one to Trinidad. She is also scheduled to travel to Barbados and Suriname.
