–refuses KS interview
By Edison Jefford
Guyana’s table tennis queen, Michelle John is expected to leave tomorrow for the United States of America where she is to take up a partial table tennis scholarship with Linwood University in Missouri.
When contacted yesterday for an interview, John told Kaieteur Sport (KS) that she is not available despite this newspapers move to meet her at her discretion. She informed that she already has an interview lined up for today.
As an alternative, Kaieteur Sport resorted to having the interview done via telephone but in the early stages of that process John’s mobile phone went busy and remained that way until press time yesterday evening.
This newspaper understands that the top table tennis player also dodged a television sport show: Mark Young’s Sports Desk on HBTV Channel 9 on Monday, where the intention was to also interview the athlete.
Repeated calls to John’s father, Owen John, who was instrumental in the scholarship deal also proved futile yesterday. This newspaper understands that the parent may be on leave to travel to the United States with his daughter.
“He searched for a University online that was offering a table tennis scholarship and emailed them with my profile and they responded,” was all John said over the telephone before her cellular phone went busy.
However, General Secretary of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Godfrey Munroe updated Kaieteur Sport as to the content of the scholarship since the association was also important in its procurement.
“It’s a four–year partial scholarship where Mings Products and Services Limited will be providing the additional part for tuition and so on; she still has to play tennis there if she is to keep the scholarship,” Munroe indicated.
The GTTA General Secretary said that the opportunity is a welcomed one for the double National Sports Commission Sports Woman of the Year and the intention is to position other players for similar opportunities.
“It’s a good opportunity for her and the view is that other players will be positioned in the same way. Hopefully, she will be able to return her skills to the country at our request,” Munroe told this newspaper yesterday.
Asked what the departure of John will mean to the association, Munroe quickly pointed to the positive impact of the erudition chance. He said that, more than anything, it will give players the motivation to continue.
“Its really good for us you know–it’s an incentive for players to continue to play since it will raise the profile of the sport and it also shows what can be achieved if education is merged with the sport,” Munroe observed.
But in addition to the motivational factor of John’s scholarship, her departure will put an obvious dent in Guyana’s women’s team competition. Her exit will leave rival Trenace Lowe without a potent international partner.
