Choosing this year’s Sportsman and Woman of the year seems to be much easier than last year if one is to compare the achievements of the two frontrunners with those of other contenders.
The overwhelming choices in the respective categories are West Indian middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Men) and distance runner Alika Morgan, who seems an irresistible selection for the Women.
The former WI Captain has formed himself into a run machine churning out 909 runs from 9 tests at an astonishing average of 101.00, while his returns in one-day internationals where he played 13 matches and scored 578 runs at an average of 64.22 is equally impressive.
Chanderpaul or ‘Tiger’ as he is familiarly called followed up 2007 with another breathtaking year which saw him deservingly sweep most of the top awards in the sport both locally and internationally.
The left-handed maestro won the ICC Cricketer of the Year (presented with the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy); was selected to the ICC World Test XI; named Wisden Cricketer of the Year; WI Test and One-Day Cricketer of the Year; WIPA Cricketer of the Year; Guyana Cricket Board Cricketer of the Year and most importantly received a Guyana National award (The Golden Arrow of Achievement) to crown a majestic twelve months.
On the distaff side, Alika Morgan, also had some remarkable results in 2008 and should easily escape the controversy this time after her non-selection for the top award last year sparked much debate in the media and related circles.
Morgan completely dominated her rivals at home and abroad in a peerless display of distance running even when competing among seniors.
