Yesterday morning, employees of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) set about demolishing a house located at Lot 36 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty.
According to the workers conducting the demolition, they had been given instructions to demolish the house by one of the City’s engineers. They added that no one resides in the house which was owned by the Benjamins, who now reside overseas.
Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green, explained that buildings, which the City deems unsafe, are demolished at the expense of the owner of the properties.
Green said that the owners are usually given two months’ notice, both verbal and written, before the buildings are torn down.
Oftentimes, when this notice is given, the owners of the buildings tear the structures down themselves, but if they do not do this, then the City takes its own action to flatten the structures themselves.
It was also noted by the Mayor that there were several other buildings about Georgetown, which the M&CC has eyed for demolition, as they represent a safety hazard for persons living in the environs.
The building had been a threat to the house occupied by Maude Burrowes, who claimed that she had written countless times to City Hall, seeking to have them demolish the building.
The woman said that she had been making petitions since 1998, escalating her requests by 2005.
The workers who effected the demolition appeared to risk life and limb to enter the leaning building. They ripped down sections of the building and are supposed to return today to complete the exercise.
