The Short Messaging Services (SMS) interconnection deal between the Guyana Telephone and Telephone Company (GT&T) and Digicel Guyana now hinges on a contract that is proving ever elusive, with neither side able to pronounce on a definitive date.
According to a senior GT&T official who is au fait with the negotiations, the telephone company still has some issues with the proposed contract while a Digicel official says that GT&T is yet to communicate with that company.
This newspaper understands that the legal team, engineers and hierarchy at the GT&T are currently still analysing the final draft of the interconnection agreement.
The general definition of SMS is the transmission of short text messages to and from a mobile phone, fax machine and/or IP address.
All of the technical tests have been conducted and as soon as GT&T has cleared the current draft agreement as acceptable then the service will be implemented, meaning that GT&T subscribers will be able to send text messages to Digicel Subscribers and vice versa.
The negotiations have been on going for a number of years but in the beginning Digicel was asking for too much to be included under the definition of SMS, GT&T said.
A senior Digicel official noted, however, that the deal was now somewhat at a stalemate and it would require pressure from the citizenry of Guyana to force the hand of GT&T into hastening the deal, which would allow persons to send and receive SMS messages across the networks.
