– No trace of poisons in body
The post mortem on Edwardo Barreios’s body listed the cause of death as heart failure due to coronary occlusion. This means that the dead man’s arteries were blocked, possibly triggering a heart attack.
The autopsy also failed to discover any traces of poisons in the body. The considerable state of decomposition, however, could have masked any poisons the Cuban may have taken.
There have been reports that on December 31, Barreios spoke with one of his countrymen, who is a doctor, and had complained of chest pains. These chest pains may have been signs of impending heart failure.
Police have almost ruled out foul play, since there are reports that Barreios, who had been in Guyana for the past 10 years, had appeared to be in ill health recently.
“He sounded quite depressed over the last couple of days,” a friend said. “He complained of feeling unwell, and said that some days he didn’t even have the strength to get out of bed and drink sugar water, on which he had been surviving for the past couple of days.”
The cremation is scheduled for today but there has been no confirmation of when the ashes will be taken back to Cuba. Barreios’s mother, Tamara Serres, who resides in Cuba, apparently gave permission to have the body of her son cremated in Guyana, and the ashes returned to Cuba.
A small service will be held at the Lyken Funeral Parlour, and will apparently see participation from the University of Guyana and the Cummings Lodge Government School, where Barreios taught Spanish.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, efforts were made by the Cuban Embassy to retrieve the dead man’s car (PJJ 4445). However, the police did not release the car, as they were still continuing their investigations.
Added to this, the father of Barreios’s apparent lover attempted to uplift some of his daughter’s personal effects, including clothing and books.
The contents of Barreios’s apartment, at Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge, are in police custody and reports from Cuban nationals have said that the contents of the apartment will be eventually sold and the money sent to Barreios’ mother in Cuba.
Barreios’s body was discovered by a neighbour who said that she began getting a foul smell, but initially thought that it was coming from a dead animal in the area. As the stench grew stronger, and coupled with the fact that she had not seen the Cuban for a few days, she decided to investigate.
She discovered the decomposing body lying face down on his bed. The man was said to be in what is called the recovery position.
Barreios was an electrical engineer who was lecturing in Business Management at the University of Guyana. Recently, many of the persons who saw him said that he appeared to be in ill health, while others said that he sounded quite depressed.
